I purchased a Palram SkyLight Apex Shed 8 x 12 (amber colour). I chose it because I needed a fairly large storage space to fit a concrete base that I’d had made in my garden. I also wanted a shed which was low maintenance. With its tough polycarbonate panels, the Palram fits the bill in that regard, as I won’t ever need to show it a paintbrush. The design of the Palram shed is also attractive and looks well in the garden setting in the amber colour I chose. One of its best selling points for me is the translucent roof, which magically lets light into the shed interior while looking like a regular dark-coloured shed roof from the outside. The shed also seems to hold in any warmth from the sunshine, suggesting to me that anything I put in there is unlikely to get damp, especially if silicone is applied all around the area where the floor meets the bottom of the shed. Unfortunately, I do have several criticisms about the shed, mainly with regard to assembling it. Firstly, I’d advise anyone to only attempt to build this structure in weather conditions that are calm and almost totally devoid of anything but the lightest breeze. Prior to purchasing the shed, I watched a video of two men building a Palram with apparent ease. This was not my experience and somewhat misleading in my opinion. You do definitely need at least two people, as any wind can start to lift your partly-constructed shed as if it were a sail, especially once you’ve started putting the polycarbonate panels in place. This is a particular problem with a shed as large as the 12 x 8 model, given that it does not come with a plastic floor to hold the base of the framework together, unlike the smaller models. The instruction manual also leaves something to be desired in terms of clarity in places. I couldn’t help thinking at times how much easier it would be if the instructions had been made from photographs rather than line drawings, but I imagine the manufacturers are trying to keep costs low. Unfortunately that leaves the poor customer to comprehend the not-always-clear illustrations. The quality of the parts provided was generally good, though several of the aluminium parts came slightly bent in places. I also felt that some of the plastic parts, like the components which join the threshold at the shed door to the rest of the frame, should really have been made of metal, as they have to take a considerable strain, especially until the shed is anchored into its final position. To be fair, the manufacturers did replace several of these parts when they broke. The shed’s relative lightness made me look into getting extra securing points put around the bottom to ensure it stays put in windy conditions and doesn’t end up like Dorothy’s home at the beginning of ‘The Wizard of Oz’! I was also helpfully advised by A1 Sheds of an anchoring kit that is available if you wish to strap the shed down from the outside. In summary, the shed really does look attractive, has a maintenance-free advantage over wooden sheds and features a brilliant roof design that allows daylight inside without the need for windows. On the downside, it is not easy to assemble and several of the plastic parts should really be made of metal for better robustness.
